I went to an OSHA seminar held by three lawyers that deal with OSHA on a regular basis. They said that one of the best things to do is to be nice, document everything they say and you say, set up an informal meeting first (this will sometimes reduce the fine even if you don't beat it. If you've been good up till now, the fine probably won't be too bad. Of course if you get a chronically unhappy OSHA agent, crying wouldn't hurt.
