>My name is John Rowe I would like to thank Rickey Sais, Dan Machucha, Ed Castro, Wayne Rollins, Pops{Mike Vandoren} and John Ward for going with me to help look for survivors at the World Trade Center. Here is my story. After watching the disaster on TV I knew we had to do something. We are currently doing a rebuild on LI>NY at approx. 7:30 pm Tues night 9-11-2001, I kept thinking of the children who were going to go home to an empty house and be missing a parent when they got home and knew we had to do something to try to help, I have a Red Cross CPR and med card we decided to try to get to the World Trade Center to help the fire man dig for survivors we left our hotel at approx 7:45 pm to try to get to the city, we hit our first police road block and they weren't going to let us through, I showed them my Red Cross card and told them we were the hand dig crew going to help the firemen, we encountered approx 20 some road blocks along the way telling them all the same thing, all of them said ok and thanks we finally arrived at the Brookyln bridge, and parked our trucks,we started to walk towards the bridge when a police van stopped us they said we couldnt walk across the bridge and they would give us a ride we jumped in the van and were on our way they took us to ground zero. When we got out of the van we could not believe the sight of the devestation that took place. None of us were prepared for what we were about to encounter, we were only cable guys standing at ground zero, we started to ask the workers on sight what we could do, we first helped to un load a truck of lumber once we finished that we started to ask were we could get hard hats, masks and eye protection once we had them we started to help the steel workers remove chunks of steel, while doing that a fireman called that he needed help up on top of the pile that was once the World Trade Center. Here we were a bunch up cable line men climbing up over piles of concrete assisting the fire men looking in any crack and crevice we could find looking and listening for any sound. We continued helping all night long. We all have famlies back home, none of us thought about the danger of what we were doing. Rescue workers found 3 dead bodies 20 feet from where we were working. We all went over to see if we could help, thats a sight none of us will ever forget. The fires were still burning all night long, none of us are ever going to forget the intense smell of the smoke. We left the sight at approx. 4am Wed morning we tried to get a ride back over the Brooklyn Bridge but we couldnt find one, we walked all the way from ground zero back across the bridge the walk back to our trucks was a quiet one, while crossing the bridge, one of the guys said to me he couldnt believe what we just did and that we were part of history. I just want to thank the men of Communication Specialists Inc. that had the courage and bravery risking their own lives to help myself and the entire country do our part.I am proud to have been a part of the rescue team. To all the cable dawgs out there, please do your part to help, give blood or pray for all the missing people and families of those involved. Thanks to Rickey ,John, Ed ,Dan, Wayne and Pops!!
