I agree with wamerrell. Since you have experienced speeds of up to 500kbps, I would suspect your drop or home wiring less than the loading of the CMTS at the headend, or possibly a bottleneck upstream from there. Bad connections in the plant can affect your speed intermittantly, as can ingress in the upstream ( though, usually not downstream) path. My guess would be that you're experiencing a slowdown from increasing traffic in your node or whole system. If it happens in the early to mid evening, it would be a good indicator of this. If so, let your cable company know, and ask them for some bandwidth test sites on the web, so you can log and send your results to them. If they need to add bandwidth the fix is pretty expensive, so they sometimes drag their feet. Keep pestering them, though, and they will eventually track it down.
