Re:asking about the length of pins?

>Yes the length ofthe pin matters in systems that are running the higher MHz systems. The equipment manufacturers have a spec. for the pin length that varies from brand to brand (for G.I. 860 gear the length is 1.45" to 1.65"), if the spec. is not adhered to there will be an impedance mismatch. As far as splicing in the rain goes, as long as you can keep everything completely dry it isn't a problem, if you can't it is a big problem. The days of the cable hack are over, doing it properly makes a big differance in the performance of the system for years to come.

>Hats off to everyone. It sounds like everybody knows the correct way to splice. Although, it is virtually impossible to get everyone to splice the same. Center conductor length is critical. Put a mark on your nines and stick with it. Raining out? Well...It's tough. You must keep your stock dry. I'm sure we all have the nice bucket with the enclosed man baskets and a magical pop up canapy when we're on our hooks. We must do our best. One issue that I have noticed with 715QR and Gilbert connectors. Backnuts. Torqu spec. is 30lbs. When sweeping you can see the response drop off around 830 Mhz (it varies). It drops off hard. You can track it to one connector, peel the shrink, put the cresent to it. It's gone. Although this has been the cure in most cases, the back nuts are tight the majority of the time. If you look at the connector closely the inner sleeve is not tightest fit. The back nut should tighten enough to grip the aluminum. Coring tools have been checked for flaws and splicing techniques have been observed. All other cable types are trouble free. PIII is always a treat. Just checking to see if anybody has observed the same thing. Sweeping is not a weekend thing for me. I just hate 715QR. Happy Holidays to all!
