I had a similar problem.
I went to:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htm The knowledgebase is pretty good.

Now I am using a Direct Cable Connection to connect to my other computer.

With Direct Cable Connection, you can gain access to shared folders on another computer, even when your computer is not on a network. If the other computer is connected to a network, you can also gain access to that network.

That was the easiest way I found, and it works out great!
