Sweeping is checking the bandwidth properties of the actual coax cable. Think of a radio dial & you're checking to see how well each "bandwidth" is functioning. When sweep is done properly the coax response will show how well the craftsmen who pulled the coax did their job & how good the splicers are.

Or how bad.
