Just a reminder...

"Abuse" is defined as any violation of the Terms of Use listed above. Examples:

Personal attacks. A public forum is not the place to air personal differences. These should be addressed privately through email if necessary. Remember what Mom told you, "If you don't have anything nice to say..."
Slander. It is perfectly acceptable to post true and accurate facts. For example, "I worked for XYZ, Inc. They said I'd get paid in 30 days but I still haven't seen a dime after 3 months. I'd advise anyone not to work for them." It is NOT acceptable, however, to make accusations: "XYZ, Inc. doesn't pay their contractors and if you work for them you'll get screwed." PLEASE understand the difference. YOU CAN AND PROBABLY WILL BE SUED IF YOU POST SLANDEROUS STATEMENTS.
Advertising. For example, "XYZ, Inc. makes the best signal level meters. Stop by our web site at xyzslm.com." Reading several posts like this is a mere annoyance, but if left unchecked will eventually drown out more useful content. If you are unsure about what qualifies, please inquire before posting.
Frequent repeat posts. Job openings, items for sale, and new web site announcements are all acceptable the first time they're posted. When posted every week (or worse) they are no better than advertising. In cases where a job isn't immediately filled or an item remains unsold it is acceptable to post the current status in a reply to the original message.
Illegal activity. For instance, offering chipped converters for sale or soliciting stolen goods. This should be obvious.
Using a phony email. Free Hotmail or Yahoo accounts that get accessed infrequently are not acceptable. Failure to reply to an inquiry from a CABL administrator within a reasonable amount of time will result in this assumption. You can choose not to make your address available to the public so there is no reason to supply other than your regular address.
Do not mistake the free and open nature of these forums as an invitation to ignore the rules. For the benefit of everyone that uses this forum, FLAGRANT ABUSE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Disputes

What should you do if you dispute a posting by another person? First, take a moment to assess the actual affect it will have. Regular Bar visitors are accustomed to the flamers and their ways. A posting that is hostile or defamatory is more likely to reflect badly on its author than its intended target. If you feel it deserves a reply, then by all means defend your position. A tactfully crafted response will speak volumes.

Can you delete a message you don't like? Generally, no. Only the author can delete his messages. In rare instances where the Bar terms of use are clearly violated (such as the author's email address is no longer valid) it may be possible to have the message removed. Please review the disclaimer above.

How can you determine the identity of a poster? It may be difficult, and in the end could require a court order if the user's ISP doesn't willingly provide the information. The first step is to get the IP address from the message. This is the set of four numbers separated by dots (ex: 123.45.67.89) Use this form to resolve the IP to a host:
