Question concerning box swaps &/or cable modem installs

I've been seeing posts looking for people to perform box swaps. What is involved in swapping boxes, ie: special tools, meters, training & etc.? On initial consideration, it does not sound like a particularly complicated endeavor, but what the heck do I know?
I've also seen posts re: cable modem installs. Does this require any special (see above), or does it just entail installing & configuring it?
