One of the smartest men I have ever met (in the top 3 for sure) said, "Who ever gets to the house first with fiber wins." He said that 30 years ago while I was working for him in Mexico. And he is right. Using old coax plant is just a stepping stone. IMHO It is short term thinking. Sure you can get fast internet to the home cheaper using existing cables but If someone overbuilds that coax plant with fiber optics, they are doomed. The speed of fiber is limited by the electronics at both ends. The speed of coax is limited by the OSP electronics. So coax is dying! And MSOs who don't build FTTH will find out sooner than later that they should have spent the money to build a 100% fiber optic OSP.
BTW 10G is not that fast anymore.
