I have been in this business for over 40 years. 50 if you count the time I spent fixing TVs in high school. So I don't think 5 years is a long time. Our company used to have as many coax splicers as line crews. But now we have no coax splicers. Why? No future in it. As a young person entering the work force, why in the world would anyone want to learn an obsolete trade that is essentially gone, except for a few sporadic projects that will MAYBE last only 5 years. I understand the SHORT term economic advantages of using 20 to 40 year old coax in your upgrade but it is a NOT a long term solution. 30 years ago, one of the smartest men I have ever met said to me, "WHO EVER GETS TO THE HOUSE WITH FIBER FIRST, WINS!" The more I thought about that statement the more I believed it would be true. Now 30 years later, it is true. There were and are FTTH over-builds all over the country proving his statement to be very accurate.
