this in itself goes a LOOOOONNNGGG way. what i do: knock on the door. inform the homeowner that you need to work on the pole in the backyard. is there a problem with me taking my truck back there? i will be careful and if something were to happen i will resolve it with you b4 i leave. generally this approach has been well respected. even got me onto property that was messed up by some idiot who didn't have the decency to even ask in the 1st place. (i'm there usually to fix that idiots screw-ups). the best possible policy to follow in these cases is RESPECT. treat the sub the way you want to be treated. dont think because you are mr. cable that you dont have to answer to anybody. youd be wrong.
