Start with new build, find someone experienced to shadow for a couple weeks (and does clean work). Most of the industry is "fake it till you make it" nowadays. If their fosc prep looks like crap, there's not much your going to learn other than bad habits. Butt splicing can be learned in weeks as its just repetition.
As others have said, hold off on existing plant re-entry. 90% is just attention to detail and work ethic. The guys that cut corners to save 10 minutes here and there spend a lot of time on the couch while others are working.
FOA is reference material, skip the splicing schools, you'll still be unqualified to do anything and $1500+ poorer.
