A cheap fusion splicer is one thing. You can test your splice with a good OTDR. A cheap OTDR is your final defense against lingering issues. I have seen some of the mid range OTDRs that constantly give horrible results. They show fake reflective events, miss actual events and are off on measured distance. I would hate to see what happens when it gets cheaper. I would pass.
