Even if you work units...your hours worked on units, must equal at least the minimun wage scale and if your work in excess of 40 hours in a week, then o/time rates apply. Now if your an independent sub contractor with your own insurance and equipment and paid with 1099, you must keep your records. If your a sub renting equipment from the prime contractor, you can write off those expense for rental, the same with all your tools/clothes/road expense/vehicle/gas/ete etc. However with last year change in tax laws...best to check with an accountant.
