Micro Man
I have/had the best of both worlds. As I said I earned my BSEE. But I liked the outdoors better than sitting behind a desk. So when I received a call from a small mom-pop cable company that offed me lots of money, I jumped at the opportunity. Because we were so small, I was able to do everything; Climb poles, build line, buried cables, did locates, trouble shoot line and headends, etc. But my degree was not wasted. I also attended franchise meetings, trained the techs correctly, designed OSP, headends, built a repair facility, designed specialty circuits for switching, time outs, tone decoders, etc. I was one on the few to have a Tectronix 7L12 Spectrum Analyzer and knew how to use it. Threrfore, I was the one that was called when there were difficulties trouble shooting.
After left the mom-pop, my business partner and I started our own turnkey contracting company. It would have been more difficult to do without my degree.
