Listen up Dude: This industry is a about 71 years old, up until 1972 you were paid by the hour with Travel Allowance, you were an employee of the company....then some smart contractor decided he needed a fixed guarantee % of profits...so he started paying unit rates, you didn't work...it cost them "NOTHING", you were no longer an employee,, you was considered "DAY LABOR", some would even rent you back the equipment to work with (Trk-Trailer-Lasher-Block-etc). Nothing has changed since back in those days. Today most work with no benefits at all or job security for the family back home, while you travel around like a damn "Tramp Lineman" living in cheap motels, eating at Taco Bell/Wendy/MickeyD and hoping you got enough funds to keep your equipement running.
All I can tell you is to try to link up with a decent company that treats you like an employee, I've been lucky to have worked every phase of this changing industry for the last 54 years to include owning a cable system and being a prime national contractor.
It has to change due to all the changing advanced technology and competition from the Ma Bell companies, it needs to be back to hourly wages, travel allowance, benefits. So good luck - keep safe. Treat others as you desire to be treated: MicroMan
