wow , this is a new problem i never heard of before. i would say it's the choke too. when you push the start button it connects your battery to the onan and when you let off it disconnects it and choke , ing.coil , fuel pump are supplyed by onan [like a magneto] and only battery connection is to charge it [8 amp at first then when it senses mostly charged drops to 2 amp]. maybe a loose connection to choke [there closed at first and voltage heats a coil to open it and keep it open] ? maybe start it then attach a spring to choke lever to keep it open ? mine was coverted to a hand choke before i got it and even in winter [in ohio] as soon as it starts running i can open it all the way . before it starts running like crap does it run nice and smooth [not hunting] ? i hope this helps .
