Keep in mind - most states require workmans compenasation after a certain number of employees, such as five here in MO. However if you do not pay for workmans compenasation and and someone is injured, they are entitled to payment for hospital or whatever costs associated with the injury. Difference is you pay for it out of your pocket. Case in point I had workmans compensation in place for just a couple years and someone I hired was supposed to meet our mapping crew in Bossier City Louisiana. I hired him on a Saturday, and he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and ran into a parked semi Monday night on way to project. He did not survive but my agent said his wife he was seperated from for several years was paid $ 82,000 as a benefit from the policy in place.
