At the most basic, a bacteria is composed of 5 things, DNA, RNA, sugars, proteins, and the phospholipid membrane that wraps around everything. We can make all of these things, but it's the putting everything together that is hard. To make a cell, you need to inject the DNA, RNA, sugars, and proteins into a membrane ball in precise amounts without breaking the ball, and we can't do that yet. So what Venter did is he injected a cell that already has everything except the DNA with brand new DNA, converting what is formerly just a bag of biochemicals into a living organism that can eat, grow and reproduce.
