boom extends but will not retract

I have a 1986 boom truck.  It has lower controls on each side.  On the drivers side the OEM control that extends and retracts the boom will only extend it.  The control can normally be moved forward to extend and moved back to retract the boom.  In eithier position it only extends the boom.  The passenger side control works fine.  Anyone ever experience this or know what might be the problem?
