Waiting to go out on your own...Hummmm !! If your working for a reputable company and receiving full benefits, then My suggestion would be to stay where you are. Sub Contracting does have some goof features, but in this business your find some many bad times with the few good times that your better off to stay where you Are. Right now it's all about Fiber, if your looking for work, look in the state of NY where everyone in the state will be getting the opporltunity to be a internet subscriber. Lots of rural build.
