Telsta 28ft electric motor overheating

My neighbor has an older truck for lighting work that has a Telsta 28ft boom on it.  It's electric and I believe it's the kind where you need to press and hold the start toggle switch, press and hold the motion toggle switch and work the toggle switch for the direction you want to go all at the same time. His pump motor keeps overheating to the point it burned some wires the other day. Anyone have experience working on these that Mau be able to point him in the right direction?
