Prayers go out to his family. Rule of thumb is if it's deeper than your knees it should be shored up, if it's deeper than your hips it needs to have the steel reinforced work boxes. That being said I can recall quite a few times that I've gone into trenches that should have been over my head and had no reinforcment.
If everyone is thinking alike, someone isn't thinking.
