Great topic MicroMan. It is suprising how many people are unaware of the dangers of working in a trench, as well as the requirements when doing so. As a worker, there were instances that I refused to work in, and had the contractor come out at their expense to fix the issues. As a supervisor I have shut down work areas until the contractors have fixed the saftey infractions. Like you said, nobodies life is worth risking just to make budget or deadlines.
As far as lifes go, two workers here were killed in a trench collapse this past May. Osha just recently fined the company responsible $77000. That is all. And of course the company feels that is excessive and is appealing the fine.
