The law applies to any one working in excess of 40 hr/week,,,,exception is that if your being paid salary and make in excess of $42,500 yr..... they do not have to pay for your time over 40..but if you make less....they have to pay you.
Piece rate/unit work will eventually go away...it will all be hourly, with overtime, bonus, benefits,etc
No matter who where or what you are doing....you have to at least be paid the minimum wage rate.
