I believe california has been doing this for many years and thats why mastec pulled out with production crews.  Texas also started doing this recently where if you work over 40 they take your total production and break it down to an hourly rate and then the company pays you for the overtime.   I dont think the yearly amount you make matters.  It is not right that they apply this to piece rate because if we want to work extra hours for extra piecerate then the company should not be required to pay out extra overtime.  Most of us who do piecerate know what the prices are and shouldnt expect overtime pay.  Its motivation to get a particular job done quicker/efficient so you can make that money quicker and move on to something else.
