To expand on what Chris said, the job functions for the most part are to measure poles and document, location, pole number, at what height of attachment everything is at, what the configuration of the pole is (ie: Dead end. false dead end, in line), where any risers may be located on the pole, does it need an anchor and guy and the distance to the next location. Then take all the info collected and compile it into the format the company you are working for wants. As TeleMan said below, a knowledge of linework is real helpful. And the most important part of being a field engineer, never let the line crews that are using your walk sheets find out who you are.
