"Big Bertha" Yep that's what they call it: Directional Bore Machines, the bigger the better..until they break down or are in need of repair.
Big Bertha is the World's Largest Bore Machine and is now drilling 1.7 miles under Seattle Washington, until it broke down. Drilling dirt and debris clogged up the cutting head, causing hydralic seal leaks. They had to dig a 12 story pit to put the machine in and then remove the tunnel 5 story high- 700 ton bore cutting head. The contractors down time was $150,000.
