Sounds like you need to pay the man for his work and he will return the equiptment.Looks like he is tired of getting screwed and not getting paid.If you paid him this would of been settled by now. If he lost the equiptment you would of charged him for it and taken it out of his pay owed,what is the problem he has more equiptment than you have his money ?
