Reg I'll tell you what has always worked for me (except on the shrink with the black glue). I take my razor blade knife and cut the shrink length ways cutting all the way through at the fitting then not quite through at the cable (so you don't score it). Then I take my screwdriver shove it under the cut at the fitting and pry the shrink (one side) loose from the fitting so your cut opens up. Once your cut opens up to the end, most of the time, it will pop off. If it doesn't then I just warm it up a little and continue. Once you get the hang of it you will have it off in less then a min.
PS. burning off the shrinkboot can also damage the dielectric in the cable.
