You can work for someone that has a license as an employee, but do not get caught working as a contractor in Cal without a license. The state is diligent about making sure there are not any unlicensed contractors of any profession here. The license is not hard to get, 4 years in a profession, a test and a filing fee. There are schools set up to teach the test, which is mostly labor law. A C-7 license includes low voltage control systems, such as irrigation, alarm and communication, which you have to have a working knowledge of all.
