It seems this whole conspericy theory was made up by the New York Herald-Tribune in 1942. Fritz Thyssen had a falling out with Hitler and fled Germany and was captured in France in 1941. He was detained for the remainder of the war. So his donations had stopped by the time the U.S. entered the war. Some people believe (but can't prove) that the Rockefellers started the rumor to discredit their competition in an attempt to controll the banking industry.
