Both companies sell a luxury item,

You can have a long happy life without either one. There may be some amusement value or current event awareness. You are paying for around 40% commercial advertising with your monthly subscription. Reception is equivalent. Channel list preferences are subjective.

If one went out of business the other one would raise prices. If both went out of business the OTA and CATV folks would raise their prices. The internet may do to all of them what TV did to radio.

DISH equipment is buggy compared to Directv stuff. Both systems are getting more complex as they offer more services.
