Supreme Court seals Romney's fate

Any hope of a come-from-behind win for Mitt Romney necessitated a win for the embattled challenger in the state of Ohio. The path to 270 electoral votes may be all but impossible for the candidate should he lose this crucial swing state. With state polls showing a steady 5-point or more deficit for Governor Romney over the course of the campaign, Republicans' best hopes were tied to voter suppression of a demographic that leans heavily Democratic: early voters.

Those hopes were dashed today when the US Supreme Court rejected a challenge to a prior ruling against changes to the law by Ohio's Republican secretary of state and attorney general.  Today's ruling is expected to provide a boost of 100,000 or more voters in the Democratic column, potentially affecting many downticket races as well. President George Bush defeated Senator John Kerry in Ohio in his 2004 re-election bid by just 25,954 votes. Without Ohio's 20 electoral votes, Bush would have lost to Kerry.
