I don't like labels, but here are some of my thoughts:
Self sufficient: I feel if you are able bodied and of sound mind, you should be able to support yourself, if you're fit enough to stand on a street corner asking for money, your fit enough to work. Although, everyone may need help at one time or another, but it should be a hand up, not a hand out.
You should be responsible for yourself and your family, but you should take care of yourself first, if you can't take care of yourself, how in the hell do you expect to be able take care of anyone else.
Financial responsibility, live within your means, buy only what you can afford, no one needs credit cards, no one needs a shinny new car they can't afford. If you only make $12 an hour, you should be driving a $4000 paid for car, not have a $30,000 car with $600 monthly car payments. If you are poor, how do you expect to be able to help yourself, or your family?
