I have been in CATV sales and installation for over 20 years. I used to go out early in the day and audit then go back out and call on the homes that were UA.
That method worked however it required lots of hours.
One day I was unable to check a tap due to home having large dog's so I came up with this.
I would knock on the door and introduce myself as an auditer with the local cable company and evidently our disconnect team never disconnected the cable and was stopping by to see if they were aware that cable is on (all the time I do not know if they are on or not) The first home I tryed this on came clean and admitted it had been on for years and they wanted to keep it.
At that point I quit auditing and used that approach at every door. When the customer is not UA I would just tell them that It could be a cut line somewhere and that since we are showing it active we will come out at no charge other then pay the first month and fix the line.
It is very effective approach and will make you lot's of sales.
