What your missing here is that this guy left the company he was with to start a new company with a manager who also left, recruited a crew, his bro-in-law, and a fiber splicer from the company he left, hmmmmm, then when these guys realized they might have made a big boo boo, some started telling others they weren't very happy and may want to return, which got back to the company who they left, who in turn, for some strange reason, told a third party to have them call him. What a soap opera, eh? And your right, it happens daily across the globe. Far as that iPhone with "conversation recorder", there is a term called, "dementia praccox", or "schizophrenia".
