For a long time there was a single main page that loaded other subpages. That made everything seem very fast since the navigation elements didn't get reloaded with every new page request. That type of site design has other problems, which is why you see few sites using it now. A lot has been done to minimize the effect. For instance, the forum index pages are actually smaller now even with the added navigation, until the editor is explicitly requested.
If there is a significant speed issue then give me some info, like browser, Internet connection type, which page(s) seem slow, etc. There could be something I'm unaware of.
