For starters: I am an amputee above the knee on my right side. I served in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman.
I was on a road trip up the east coast and stopped by Arlington National Cemetery. When getting my cripple pass so I could drive through. It was right after Irene came through and it was still raining. I went to the help desk and was told I needed to bring my cripple parking placard in,... I had left it in the car so I wouldn't get towed while getting the pass. Anyway, as I left the help desk one of my crutches hit a small puddle of water and just went from underneath me. I landed on my stump and my knee which is terrible condition. Several Veterans were on me instantly, I don't even think I had fallen all the way to the floor before they were assisting me. This was one of the most embarrassing moments I have ever had in my life. I was so upset with myself, after I fell you could hear a pin drop even with 80-100 people there. My clumsiness took peoples attention away from our countries heroes.
I had gone to Arlington to stand tall for the fallen and ended up falling and took others attention away from paying their respects.
I got my pass and continued on to visit some old friends and then continued on my trip.
I decided that to many people forget our troops. I started a memorial tattoo to honor those who have fallen and to remind people whenever they see me who they need to be thankful for. My tattoo artist rarely accepts money from me. I have almost 170 names so far on Arlington shaped headstones. The first 30 put on last September were the 30 men that were shot down last August by an RPG while on their way in a Chinook to help brothers in a firefight. My wife and I started to catalog each headstone including a little bio on each soldier. Each headstone has their rank, last name and age when they were KIA.
I am posting one picture today but there will be more to come as we get them cataloged. This picture shows the four rows on my back. The bottom two rows were added June 28th. I already had LT Micheal Murphy from Operation Red Wings. On June 28th his brothers were added so they could regroup.
Sorry I got long winded on you but there it is, the abbreviated story of why I needed to remind people where ever I go of our fallen heroes. This is just the beginning.
God Bless America!!!!
