Having been on both sides of the fence I have to say there is no one right answer to this connundrum, you have the mso's who are sketchy at best then tons of unscroupulos primes and supersubs who could give a crap less obout thier guys. True story, when my dad had is heart attack I wanted to go home to see him, at the time it was a 22 hour drive. I called my sup not 10 minutes after my mom called and the sob said you can go, but you won't have a job when you get back. At that point right there I felt like I need to drive MY truck straight up his ass. I quit o the spot and went to see my dad. The point is that kind of mentality is all over this industry almost every company has these types of assholes as mangers. Now 8 years later I have my own sub contract and refuse to tell my guys crap like that. I take care of my team, helping out with gas when they need it, helped guys with bills on occasion and so on. I actually had a tech tell me, boss I hate to say it but you really do too much for the guys.
There are three reasons why techs get mad, disgruntled and just quit...work, money and management fix management and the others will follow. I take very good care of my guys helping them when they need it being there to support them when they need it backing them up when needed, and all of them are very happy. They don't come on here complaining about anything even when the workload is slim. So the question is how do fix management in these big boys? The only way is to change the mindset of the entire company...good luck with that..
Oh and Mcknight getting rid of 1099's only hurts the industry more, make everyone go in house so the mso and prime controls them? In turn further cutting rates and pay, how does that benefit the industry? What you wind up with are a bunch of hacks that the company has to warn and chastize a thousand times before they can be fired. I can see no benefit there at all. I have 12 guys working right now all of them 1099, all of them happy..
