Ever since the us dollar was taken off the gold standard by the Nixon administration, the dollar has no backing other than the reassuring babble out of washington DC and of course OPEC. The US government has an agreement with OPEC and other countries to BUY as much oil as possible from these countries as long as these countries accept our DOLLAR as PAYMENT. This is the reason why we (the U.S.) doesnt use its own Oil which is estimated to be more than SAUDI ARABIA.
The price of oil is also tied to inflation. The more worthless the dollar becomes, the more oil prices rise.
