That question depends on the state. For instance California when I was doing work out there I found out the HSP had to cover you or directv. Because they only want one company paying on claims and eliminate claim fraud as I was told. Now Utah on the other hand you have to have all your own stuff. However since I am the owner of my own company or 1099 I can elect to not have workers comp as long as I don't have employees. Now there's a company in GA that says you have to have workers comp so they cover me while I do work for them. They charge me extra for that, but since they require it they take it out.
