did you buy a null modem adapter for the rs232 cable?

Those work sometimes, but not all the time.  Best bet is to get the pin to pin wiring diagram from jdsu website or google search, and buy a solderless 9 pin d-sub female connector, and hood, and wire the female end with the new connector/wiring scheme.  You only have to change one end.
