Sounds to me like it is a song about not being able to handle life on life's terms.
So why not just turn to drugs or alcohol to help cope with a fantasy world instead?
Sure glad that I finally decided that I don't need to get stoned to cope with life any more.
Wish I realized this many years sooner than I did
