I worked for a company back in the 90s (splicing) who did that because they were sued for overtime (piece and a half). They paid $12 an hour + a lower piece rate as a bonus. We would get OT on the $12 but not on the bonus, tax's and SS were taken out on the hourly but not the bonus. The major downside to this (I found) was that If management thought you were making to much money (more than them) and you thought you were going to have a good week, they would have you spend a day or two fixing other peoples gigs or other BS jobs at your hourly rate ( no bonus). I didn't like it and will never do it again. They supplied truck and gas and it still sucked.
