I remember doing a rail road crossing with strand (in my newbie days) Well, the tracks went around a bend close to the crossing and visibility was poor.
We were pulling the strand out on the ground and left a man at the tracks with bolt cutters ready to cut the strand "just in case".
We pulled about 150 feet past the tracks and the signal sounded.
We hurried and pulled the strand back and then the signal stopped, so we pulled out the strand again.
Again, the signal sounded, so we hurried and pulled the strand back again. And again the signal stopped.
This went on a half a dozen times before I realized that the train shorting out the tracks is what sounds the signal.
