My feeling on this, you need to adjust the amplifiers to the need of your system.
Over the year, I always found out that technician are always in a rush to PAD the input of an amplifier, specially with to-day amplifiers equipped with these new IC.
Remember, if you want a better C/N at all customer, adjust the system for GOOD C/N level and low 3TH order, this work all the time.
I feel amplifier are like car, you drive it to your need, you want to go fast, you'll get there faster, but it will cost you on gas (bad CTB) you drive slow, it will take you longer but you'll spend less gas ( better C/N)
Hope this help.
E-mail me if you an a write-up on amplifier alignment.
