You are correct night, there is a "push" tool that looks like a nut driver but is threaded so that you can screw the fitting onto it and then push it onto the cable, another way is to get an old style rg-6 connector and remove the ferral part (the part you compress or crimp), this leaves only the part of the connector that goes "into" the cable and the fitting itself, this can be pushed onto the cable to open it up. cold cable can be a problem, but ingenuity will overcome,lol
