You need a headend gear that talk to a field unit.

You insert this tool on the input of the multitap connect, your field testing equipment at the output of this tool and press the little gismo and if you do not see the INGRESS go down by 3 or 4 dB then the problem is closer than where you are to the NODE or headend if you are on a amplifer section.

You'll finally will get at the input of a multitap where the signal will go down by 3 or 4 dB and do not at his output. You then go back at the input of this multitap and remove the drop one by one until you find the faulty one. 

BUT AGAIN...... 

You do not do this with a FSM, you need the proper testing equipment.
And with the proper equipment you only need one person to do this work.
