Making a move

OK, This has been on my mind for sometime now.  Since the cable side of things is going down hill more than I like to see here in my area.  I was offered to make a move over to phone.  The bad thing is, I know nothing about phone except picking up and say what.  How much different is phone from cable?  The only reason why I am thinking of doing this is because my employer has cut my hours way down.  Less than 20 hours a week.  And I am the only tech here.  There is plenty to do here. But, they dont want it done.  Any thoughts?
